Lameness
Here at Knoellwood Equine, we are proud to offer equine lameness examinations. If your horse is lame for any reason, our entire team is dedicated to finding out the reason and helping your horse get back to normal.
With a lameness examination, we first study the legs for swelling, abnormal hoof wear, or anything else out of the ordinary. We palpate all of the joints, tendons, and ligaments to try to feel for anything abnormal that may be making your horse lame.
After the examination, we will watch your horse walk and jog (if possible). We use a hoof tester to see if the hoof is tender. We may also do a flex test to try to determine where the lameness is.
Diagnostic blocks are used to find out exactly where the problem is. We block the nerves and joints before checking for lameness. This allows us to figure out what is really bothering your horse.
Once we have a localized area, we usually recommend imaging. X-rays will give us a look at the inner workings of your horse’s leg. We may also recommend an ultrasound to give us a really detailed look at the leg.
Once we are able to figure out what is bothering your horse, we will do everything we can to help him or her get better.

Vaccinations
Since horses have different vaccination needs, depending on where they live, if they travel, and what they do, we recommend discussing your horse’s vaccination schedule with us. Together we can start a schedule that will work for you and your new horse.
Horses typically don’t get vaccinations until they are several months old, depending on their needs. Some vaccinations are started at four months old and need to be boostered three to four weeks later. Some vaccinations are not given until a horse is five to six months old. Most of these also need to be boostered three to four weeks later.
